Scottish Kennel Club(Aug) Championship Show 2017 Critique

It was a privilege to judge deerhounds here in their homeland, I would like to thank my wonderful stewards, and the exhibitors for allowing me to go over there lovely hounds, also the sporting way in which my decisions were taken.
A few concerns, there is still some over exaggeration of the hind quarters, this makes the hound look very shapely standing but the pelvis set is far too steep, so much so that it pushes the hind legs, further forward under the body creating the image of curves but in fact is a real weakness, it also creates a very poor top line with a permanent arch, keeping the top line locked, this hound cannot move forward freely, it may look attractive standing but it’s very ugly when moving.  Some over wide on the rear end with low tail sets caused by the steep pelvis sets, whilst width is certainly desired too much width affects the hounds balance at gallop. Also feet, arguably one of the most important parts of the hound, a shock absorber, flat spread feet in a sight hound when working is a recipe for injury, and a bad fault and yet it seems to becoming the accepted norm.
Last but not least some over long upper arms, sometimes the same length if not longer than the foreleg, this is a really bad fault, it affects the strength and reach that is required to move soundly forward, and is more prone to injury than a hound with a well constructed balanced front,

Temperaments as usual were superb, lovely crisp jackets and some nice uncomplicated hounds present, some very promising youngsters with lovely type so exciting for the future.

1ST Anderson & WhiteORMANSTAR KEEP A SECRET

14mths lovely head and Expression, into a well angulated neck has correct top line and fall away, nice depth to brisket with some spring, very balanced in length to height slightly erratic on the move needs to tighten up in front, but a pleasing young hound with time on his hands.

2nd Samways ERPINGHAM MAGNUS CASSACRE

16months and similar in type to one, lovely masculine head , same comments apply but my first place hound moved a little better on the day, very well and kindly handled

1st MCkinnon Dr ALMONDBANK REAL DEAL MCNEIL FOR FINGON

What a lovely young dog hound, classic in head and oozed the type of yesteryear, lovely neck into a good shoulder placement nice return to upper arm and correct length to foreleg, lovely top line and fall away, correct length to loin, nice width to thigh and second thigh, good length hip to hock, super muscle balanced in length to height ratio, but such a happy chap! That it was very hard for his handler to settle him, a real shame for me as I just could not assess his movement but thought him lovely.

1st Mcintyre ALMONDBANK WHAT A BOY MCCOY

Same comments apply as my YD winner, litter brothers which for me excel in” type”, Super crisp jacket moved out very well, to perfect would want some more width on the back end but it will come and likely would show better on grass, won the special for “Type” RCC.

2nd Sharp DrKILLOETER SKYE

3 years Super Masculine lovely neck into a good shoulder placement, super substance and rib, nice top line, correct fall away, very balanced in length to height correct length of foreleg, moved out very well, hind movement better than class winner, just preferred the type of one, but both hounds have equal but different merits.

1st McCOMBE Ms TEVIOTDALE BANNER BLUE

4 Years Masculine Head, (would prefer a little less stop,) lovely neck into an adequate shoulder, would prefer more return to upper arm, but no hound is perfect, foreleg good and nice feet with cushion, super substance lovely top line and sweep, nice depth to brisket with spring, lovely width to thigh and second thigh with low hocks, moved out really strongly with width and drive well muscled a very honest unexaggerated dog hound whose movement for me was the best in the class. Pushed for higher honours and deserves them, but I just proffered the “Type “of my CC and RCC winner.

2nd FINNET HEATHCOTE HYNDSIGHT AGAINST THE WIND

1st MILNE AND ANDREWS ISLAY’S IARLA TO LEOCH (IMP)

Classic head masculine, lacking in furnishings but did not detract, balanced muzzle to skull length finished with an aquiline nose, a very gentle dark eye, lovely ears, super neck set which flowed into a good shoulder, adequate return to upper arm, correct length of foreleg into a nice spring to pastern and one of the best sets of feet with cushion here today which scored points with me, he is long cast, with a lovely sweep over hips, correct tail set, lovely spring and depth to rib.
Moved out well, with forward reach, he just grew and grew on me, he has parallel movement is uncomplicated unexaggerated so very muscled and fit, to perfect would like a lower hock and slightly more width on the back end but no hound is perfect, he scored totally on his movement, his honesty and fitness, (so interesting when home to see he has some very interesting genetics).  Delighted to award the CC, and to learn after judging that this gave this lovely Deerhound his Crown, Considered for BOB, as he had the better feet, but I had fallen for the bitch in type.

2nd DAVIS & MACINTYRE KILLOETER QUERN AT CUILLINMOR

Super masculine head, lovely substance, nice neck into a good shoulder, lovely top line fall away, totally balanced in length to height, has super “Type” and moved out with real power and drive and presented in such a fit muscled condition.
